TRAP: You’re pushing or you’re highly ‘performative’.
COMPASS: Ask yourself: Why am I right for the role? or, What do I understand about these circumstances?
Schmacting alert!
If you need to indicate/perform or ‘schmact’, as I would say, you’re missing something in your prep work.
Go back and make sure you’ve built a solid connection to the circumstances/line of dialogue/relationship portrayed in the scene.
Knowing it rather than showing it, is about having a strong physical and imaginative connection.
How do you know that you’ve safely escaped Schmactor land? - When you think about the circumstances that you're about to live through - your stomach gets butterflies, or your heart beats faster, or the hairs stand up on your arms; these are all green flags that you have Physical Resonance with your circumstances.
If you're having a physical response-resonance, it means you've hit imagination gold and your body is on board. If nothing is going on, this is a sign you may need to go back to your homework and make bolder decisions.
“All of the great storytellers have given us these great plays throughout the centuries, across the globe, collecting their humanity and handing it to us. Our job, is to bring it to life as truthfully as we can with the experience that we have”
